2026 – 05: “Wait… You’re Paying Me Already for my Music?”

Mix Artist Studio Newsletter 05 2026

Dear Artists and Music Creators,

For a long time now, musicians have accepted a pretty brutal reality: You spend months writing songs. You rehearse endlessly. You save up for recording. You invest in mixing, mastering, artwork, distribution, promotion…

And then you wait.

You wait for streams. You wait for royalties. You wait for opportunities. You wait for algorithms. You wait for someone, somewhere, to discover what you created.

Ready to record

Sometimes that wait lasts months. Sometimes years.

And even when things do work out, most of the monetisation pathways in music only begin after the entire creative and production process is complete.

So lately, I’ve been asking myself a question:

What if recording music could become an income-generating activity immediately?

Not later. Not “once the release is out”. Not “if the algorithm likes it”. But right there, in the middle of the creative process itself.

That question is what led to the creation of the Artist Partnership Program at Mix Artist Studio.

And recently, I imagined a scenario that perfectly captures why I’m so excited about where this could lead.

Imagine an independent artist books a single day at Mix Artist Studio to record one song.

The band arrives in the morning, excited, cuppa in hand, ready to capture a song they've rehearsed for months. We spend the day recording live performances, experimenting with sounds, chasing emotion and vibes, finding those magic moments that only happen when humans are truly present in music.

By the end of the day, the song is recorded to perfection.

But it isn’t mixed yet. It hasn’t been mastered. It isn’t distributed. It’s not on Spotify. There are no streams. No royalties. No sync placements.

And yet…

That artist leaves the studio having already signed a non-exclusive licensing agreement worth AU$500. Real money. In the bank.

“Wait… You’re Paying Me Already for my Music?”

Not in exchange for ownership of the song. Not in exchange for giving up future opportunities. Not because the artist is trapped into some restrictive deal.

The artist still retains all the usual pathways: streaming revenue, APRA royalties, sync licensing opportunities, distribution and live performance income - all of it.

The licensing agreement simply allows selected material from the session to be used by Mix Artist Academy for educational purposes.

That’s it.

And suddenly, something shifts. Instead of the recording process being only an expense, it also becomes a source of immediate value.

That AU$500 might cover artwork. Or social media promotion. Or a publicist. Or simply help reduce the financial pressure that so many artists carry while trying to create meaningful work.

But there’s another part that's just as valueable.

During the session, we capture behind-the-scenes video footage: performances, conversations, studio moments, creative breakthroughs, snippets of the process itself. This footage is for educational content - and shared with the band as well.

Which means the artist walks away not only with recorded music - but with genuine content for their pre-release storytelling. Not fake AI “content”. But real moments from the studio. The kind audiences actually connect with.

And meanwhile, the educational use of the material inside Mix Artist Academy introduces the artist’s music to an entirely different audience - a global group of learners who otherwise may never have discovered the artist.

As they level up their skills, they also build a genuine connection with the music and the artist behind it.

To me, this feels exciting because it points toward something larger.

We all know the old streaming model is broken.

Streaming revenue is tiny for most artists. Social platforms reward quantity over depth. Attention is fragmented. The traditional path has become harder and harder to sustain.

But instead of endlessly complaining about it, I think we need to start inventing new models that create value for everyone involved.

Models where artists can earn earlier. Models where education and artistry support each other. Models where the creative process itself becomes valuable - not just the final upload to a streaming platform. That’s the direction I’m exploring.

Now, to be clear: This isn’t something I’ll offer to every project.

Artist Partnership Program, offered by Mix Artist Studio and Mix Artist Academy

The Artist Partnership Program is highly selective, and only certain artists or recording projects will be suitable for this kind of collaboration.

But for the right project, it could become something genuinely powerful.

If you’re curious about how it works - or if you immediately have objections, concerns, questions or skepticism - I’d genuinely love to hear from you. Seriously.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that most confusion around music industry agreements comes from complicated language and unclear communication.

So, my invitation is simple:

Reach out. Ask questions. Tell me what concerns you. And I’ll explain the details in plain English.

Because maybe the future of sustainable music creation won’t come from one giant breakthrough…

Maybe it comes from lots of smaller, more human ideas that make the journey more sustainable for independent artists.

I'm looking forward starting a conversation with you!
