2025 - 08: Turning Raw Recordings Into Professional Music Mixes

Mix Artist Studio Newsletter August 2025

Dear Artists and Music Creators,

August was the busiest mixing month at Mix Artist Studio so far. I had the privilege of mixing a 16-track album, a 3-song EP and 3 singles. Musically, it ranged from beautifully simple acoustic pieces to complex productions with huge track counts and towering stacks of vocal layers.

This variety is what I love most about mixing: every song has a unique personality. Some tracks I recorded myself, or they were recorded at other pro studios - these are usually instantly ready for mixing. Others were recorded at home, and those may need a little bit of extra TLC before mixing can start. That might mean cleaning up noise, fixing timing or pitch, and making sure every track is solid.

Either way, my goal is always the same: to take your raw recordings and craft them into mixes that truly move me - and your listeners.

I tweak and refine until I’m in love with every detail of the song. I listen closely for the feeling behind each performance and shape the mix so that emotion is front and centre. While some engineers approach mixing as a purely technical task, I see it as musical storytelling, guiding the listener’s journey and bringing out the heart of your music.

Professional Music Mixing: The Art of Getting Your Music Ready for Mastering

Once I understand your song’s story, the focus is on building a strong, professional mix that’s ready for mastering. I balance every element using faders, panning, effects, and dynamic processors to create space, depth, and character.

The most exciting part for me is automation and fader rides, where I “perform” the mix like an instrument. This keeps every element in balance while spotlighting the moments that make your music special. This last bit is the most creative part of mixing, and the part I'm looking most forward to.

It's like putting the icing on the cake, it takes a mix from 90% to 100%, and it keeps the listeners engaged and on the edge of their seats.

By the way, it’s also the inspiration behind my business name. Mix Artist is all about the creative, emotional elements of mixing - to set my work apart from engineers who approach mixes with a more technical mindset.

And it’s also a nod to the tool I’ve relied on for years to bring those final details to life: my trusty, well-worn AVID Artist Mix 8-fader controller. For many, many years, it’s been a big part of every single mixing project, and I will keep using it until it literally falls apart.
