Mix Artist Studio Newsletter March 2025
Dear Artists and Music Creators,
This month, we’re offering something truly special—an exclusive 50% discount on studio recording and mixing for ONE lucky artist or band! Before we get to the details, let’s talk about something that has the potential of getting your music project started on the wrong foot.
The Myth of ‘Fixing It in the Mix’
Do you remember Indeep's disco classic "Last night a DJ saved my life"? The song with the iconic phrase: "There's not a problem that I can't fix 'cause I can do it in the mix".

Sounds reassuring, right? And with the software and AI tools we have access to today, this is more relevant than ever. In fact, the advancements in technology mean that more and more recording problems are now solved afterwards, on the computer screen.

Whether it’s tuning a vocal, cleaning up background noise, or tightening up timing, modern technology can do things that were once unimaginable. If you’ve just bought RX or Melodyne and put in the time to learn it, of course, you’ll want to use it as soon as the opportunity arises—after all, you want to get your money’s worth, right?
But just because something can be fixed doesn’t mean it should be. Because the more a performance is edited, the more it looses its heart and soul.
Fact: Great Recordings Start At The Source
The best-sounding mixes come from the best-sounding recordings. And the best recordings come from the best musical performances - not from excessive mouse-clicks!

At Mix Artist Studio, we focus on getting the best performance possible out of you. Our goal is to capture that magic moment in the recording, where the performance is as true and emotive as possible. It starts with the acoustics of the live-room and the right microphone technique for your instrument. Once I have that, I may apply analogue compression and console EQ to taste. This way, the performances already sound like a well-balanced rough-mix by the time they hit Pro Tools. Why leave it for later?
If something isn't right, we deal with it on the spot. A buzz, a howling tom, amp noise, someone struggling with the tempo or their intonation? We find a solution immediately: a ground-lift, a tuning key, a different tempo, and you wouldn't believe how easy great intonation can be with a well-balanced headphone mix. Whatever the problem, I won't leave it for later.
This said, I have decades of experience with the 'secret' post-production editing tools of the studio trade: Beat Detective, Elastic Audio, Melodyne, RX... you name it. But these days, I record as if those tools didn't exist, and use them only sparsely (if ever), as a last resort.
So yes, with today's technology one can fix a lot in post, but it's time-consuming and rarely makes a performance more loveable.
Let’s put it into perspective: Imagine two artists with the same song. One has rehearsed every note, dialed in their tones, and nailed their performance. The other relies on the idea that a good engineer can clean up mistakes later.
Who do you think ends up with a better mix?
